The 'Striata ePostmark' eMail Billing Compliance for North America
Striata North America, in conjunction with our EPM partner, ePostmarks, provide patented, proven technologies that bring the trust and security of
the United States Postal Service's (USPS) "Electronic Postmark" to your eMail Bill / Invoice Presentment & Payment initiatives.
Striata secure emails can now include a United States Postal Service Electronic Postmark (USPS EPM):
A 'Striata ePostmark' (EPM) combines the digital signature of the sender with a unique official digital signature and timestamp issued by the USPS.
The EPM is embedded cryptographically inside the graphical postmark certificate attached to the message. 'Striata ePostmarks' bring together
for the first time in a single solution, all the attributes of a complete email authentication solution:
- Trusted USPS Branding - The USPS brand is ubiquitous and trusted by consumers.
- Accreditation - Senders must agree to abide by USPS guidelines, the federal Mail statutes, and the CAN-SPAM Act.
- Authentication - All messages are signed cryptographically by the sender and by the USPS. The attributes of the email transaction are incorporated into the EPM certificate.
- Verification - A variety of mechanisms are provided to verify the authenticity of incoming mail, including 'forward to verify' and 'click to verify'.
- Enforcement - Should fraudulent use of USPS EPM be detected, the matter will be referred to the Postal Service Inspection Service for possible review and action consistent with all relevant federal statutes.
What is an EPM?
The USPS Electronic Postmark (EPM) protects the integrity of your electronic data through the use of auditable time
stamps, digital signatures and hash codes. Striata use it to verify email invoices and bills, to provide the recipient
with total 'peace of mind' that the email bill is indeed genuine.
Based on the legal backing of an Electronic Postmark (EPM) from the USPS - we provide certification that your secure
email bill / invoice was sent at a specific time and date, that it was safely received only by the intended recipient,
and was not tampered with in transit.
These patented technologies preserve the integrity and security of the email bill from sender to the intended /
authorized recipient. Without compromising confidentiality, we aggregate information about your electronic transactions
- the content, the authenticated sender, and the authorized recipients - creating a 'digital fingerprint' of the entire
transaction. We then apply an EPM from the USPS, and send a copy of the fingerprint to the sender, the recipients, and
to a trusted third-party repository to support non-repudiation.
This provides unrivaled proof that your information was sent and received only by the intended recipients,
unadulterated, at a specific date and time. Further, this solution provides your sensitive information with the full
protection of postal law, even when sent via email or by other electronic means.
The Legal Strength of Electronic Postmarks:
Recognizing the power of doing business over the internet, Congress enacted legislation in June, 2000 making electronic
signatures the legal equivalent of their paper counterparts in most situations. The ESIGN law (Public Law 106-229)
provides the legal basis for using electronic technology to form and sign contracts, collect and store documents, and
send and receive notices and disclosures. To support the ESIGN law, the United States Postal Service offers the EPM as a
digital security service that combines trusted time stamps with content authentication. This combination proves document
authenticity and enables digital signatures. In addition, the USPS is supported by a well-established body of Federal
law, and any attempt to criminally interfere with the operation of the USPS EPM, and the data it protects, is subject to
investigation and prosecution under several Federal statutes.
