Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Once Ive opened the document, wont other people be able to see the temporary files created?
Answer: No. Once you close the document, Striata Reader deletes all temporary files created with it. So the moment you close it, its as though it never happened.

Question: So, nobody else can open this document without the username and password?
Answer: Thats right. The document is encrypted with a 168-bit 3DES encryption. It would take a computer testing a billion keys a second longer than the age of the universe to break open one document.

Frequently Encountered Problems
These have been presented in a problem / solution format, keeping to the sequence that should solve the problem the quickest. Most errors are of the first type, with users not reading the instructions in the mail.

1) Problem: When I try to open the attachment, a box appears asking me which program to run it with.
Solution: Please ensure that you have downloaded AND installed the Striata Reader. You should have seen a dialogue box saying "Striata Reader installed", as below:

2) Problem: When attempting to install the Striata Reader, I get a warning saying The publisher cannot be determined due to the problems below Authenticode signature not found
Solution: Ignore this screen, and click Yes to continue. Authenticode signatures are essentially digital certificates issued by Microsoft, which are embedded in the source code of an application. When a Microsoft system tries to install a new application, it looks for the Authenticode signature, and, if not found, gives the described warning. Striata Reader does not contain an Authenticode signature.

3) Problem: I cant open the attachment / It comes out garbled.
Solution: The first thing to ask is, have you downloaded and run the Striata Reader? If not, please visit www.striata.com to do so.

When prompted to 'Save' or 'Run' the attachment, choose 'Run'. If prompted with a Security warning that asks "Do you want to install and run striata-reader.exe from http://www.striata.com? click on Yes.

If the 'Run' option, is not available, you need to save the attachment somewhere on your hard drive. Your Windows Desktop is the easiest. Once you have saved the striata-reader.exe attachment, you need to run it - you can do this by double-clicking on the striata-reader.exe. If you saved it to your desktop, it should be visible if you minimize all windows. Once installed, a dialogue box will display a message stating that the Striata Reader has been installed. Click OK to close the message dialogue box. You will now be able to access all of your encrypted invoices and statements.

HOWEVER, if you opened the document without downloading the Striata Reader first, the chances are that youve associated the .emc documents with a different program, such as MS Excel, MS Word, or a text editor. You need install the Striata Reader as above, and then follow the below instructions to change the associations:
  1. Click the Start button
  2. Go to Settings -> Control Panel
  3. Open Folder Options
  4. Select the File Types tab at the top.
Here the Windows OS splits, depending on which version the user is running. If the user is running Windows 95, 98, or ME, then follow steps 7 13. If the user is running Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista then skip to that section and continue from there.

Windows 95, 98 or ME
  1. Scroll down until you find Striata Reader document, and highlight it by clicking it once.
  2. You should see in the lower half of the window a box called File Type Details.
  3. In this box, you should see Extension, and next to that EMC
  4. Below that, you should see Opens with, and next to that RunDLL32
  5. If not, click on Edit.
  6. A new window will open. Highlight the word Open in the lower box.
  7. Click Edit.
  8. In the command box, type the following rundll32.exe c:\windows\system\keymail.dll, OpenDocument
  9. Click Ok or Close until all of the windows are closed.

  6. Scroll through the list until you find Striata Reader, and select that.
  7. Click OK or Close until all of the windows are closed.

  3. It should say Opens with Striata Reader
  4. If not, click the Change button.
  5. A Select Program box will appear.
  6. Scroll through the list until you find Striata Reader, and select that.
  7. Click OK or Close until all of the windows are closed.
4) Problem: When I enter the username and password, I get an error saying Unable to open this document. You may have entered your username / password incorrectly.

Solution: Re-enter your Username and Password carefully. Remember that they are case sensitive.

5) Problem: I get an error that says it cannot open the document due to insufficient disk space or incorrect user permissions.
Solution: In some versions of Windows 95 and some older versions of Windows 98, one of Windows DLLs is outdated (A DLL is a library of commands). To correct this problem, please download the full Striata Reader from http://www.striata.com/_global/downloads.php (approximately 637 KB) and run it as per the normal Striata Reader. This will update the DLL, and install the Striata Reader all at once.

6) Problem: I get an error that says it cannot open the document due to insufficient permissions.
Solution: Your systems administrator may have set permissions on your machine which will not allow you to install any software. Please contact your systems administrator to resolve this.

7) Problem: I downloaded the Striata Reader, followed all the instructions, but my computer is trying to open the document with the wrong program. (HTML in Adobe, Word, etc.)
Solution: It is possible that your HTML is associated to a program that does not render it correctly. Chances are that with anything other than HTML you will see an error saying that the program cannot read the document, but HTML will show, and will usually look like rubbish.
To correct this error, you need to follow the below steps:
  1. Click the Start button
  2. Go to Settings -> Control Panel
  3. Open Folder Options
  4. Select the File Types tab at the top.
  5. Scroll down until you find HTML under the Extensions heading
  6. Under Details for HTML, you should see Opens with: . This should be Internet Explorer, Netscape, or whichever browser you use to surf the web.
  7. If you do, then youre ready to open your secure documents. If not, carry on.
  8. Click the Change button.
  9. Scroll down until you find IE, Netscape, or the browser of your choice, and select that.
  10. Click OK and OK.
8) Problem: I have entered in my username and password correctly, but when the statement opens it asks me for a username and password again, and this time it doesnt work.
Solution: This may occur if you have a proxy server or firewall at your company. To access any web pages you have to enter the username and password given to you by your administrator for the proxy server or firewall.

As a result of an image in the email that contains your statement, you will be asked first for you proxy username and password to download the image off the web and then for your statement username and password. So you must first enter your proxy (or Web) username and password before you double click and enter you statement username and password.

9) Problem: When clients receive statements to an AOL account, the AOL Anywhere browser does a number of unusual things, which prevents the user from opening the statement. AOL Anywhere sets all files received through it to open up in the AOL Anywhere browser, and so causes a fault when the user has Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator (or any other browser) set as their default browser. (See also 10)
Solution: Get the user to send their statement on to another email account, and download it from there. If the user doesnt have another (non-AOL) account, they can use a web based account such as webmail (www.webmail.co.za). This is a cumbersome process, and is not an ideal solution, but Striata are currently working to correct the problem.

10) Problem: With some web based accounts, when saving an unknown format to disk (to the users hard drive), the program tries to save it as a file type .cgi, which then opens usually with notepad, and shows the cipher text (Garble).
Solution: When saving to disk, make sure that the user enters .emc in the save as type box.

11) Problem: When trying to install the Striata Reader, users get an error referring to Ordinal 6880.

Solution: This is an incompatibility within Windows NT Workstation. To correct this error, ensure that users are downloading and installing the latest version of Striata Reader (striata-reader-1.0-25-win32.exe or later). This will correct the error, although it may still show the dialogue box. If it does, click OK to continue, and the reader will install. On many of the systems encountered so far, some DLL files are outdated as well, in which case the user must download and install the "Full" Striata Reader (striata-reader-full-1.0-25-win32.exe or later).
